September 13, 2020 - Hot Mess, Stowaway, and other visitors
When Raven arrived she was in desperate need of a deep cleaning. There was salt spray all over the exterior and with 101 days of travel time there had been numerous bodies (crew and mechanics) passing through the interior leaving body oils, etc. Lois's description of the situation - this boat is a HOT MESS!
We spent three solid weeks cleaning and organizing the boat, removing unwanted items and adding our personal items, making Raven finally feeling like our new home. We did this while repositioning between our yacht club's (Queen City Yacht Club) main station (7 day), outstation (8 days) and Elliott Bay Marina (5 days). In the middle of all the cleaning we did manage to get our first anchoring experience under our belt as we set the hook in Liberty Bay for one night.
Special mention goes out to Tom and Deanna on their Selene 59 Little Bird. While we were at our outstation they arrived and anchored in Eagle Harbor to drop off their daughter at the Bainbridge ferry. We had a chance to see each other in passing and hope to rendezvous in Liberty Bay this weekend with other Selenes that may be in the area.
As we were finishing up cleaning and taking care of some repair items at Elliott Bay Marina, we found a Stowaway! Yes, we found a Gecko climbing about on our hard top! After a bit of effort we were able to capture the little fellow and then ........
No, we did not dispatch him, rather Lois found a licensed agency that accepts imported wild creatures and takes them into their care to lice out their lives and provide educational opportunities at schools. So we drove 30 minutes in rush hour traffic to meet this person and transfer our stow away to his new sanctuary.
As we wrapped up work at Elliott Bay Marina, we prepared to make a trip down to Gig Harbor as an inaugural outing and to visit with fellow Selene 60 owners Mark and Roseanne to share boat info. Before departing Elliott Bay Marina we awoke to find some company near our boat - three seals lounging on the dock!
We had an interesting cruise south as the smoke from the wildfires in Oregon filled the air leaving us in something equivalent to fog requiring the use of our radar to safely navigate to Gig Harbor. Anchoring near their boat Koinonia, we lowered the tender and had a good 3 hours of touring each others boat and look forward to learning more from Mark and Roseanne in the future.
Today, after finishing breakfast, we had another visitor - a Great Blue Heron! Herons, Seals and Geckos visiting Raven, will take this as a good sign that we will continue to enjoy wildlife sitings during our journeys on Raven.
