July 27, 2021 - Glacier Bay

We started the morning watching our grizzly bear cruise the shoreline and realizing that two small cruise ships were already headed towards the glaciers.  We got ourselves going ASAP to follow them and realized the New Amsterdam was closing form behind.  Along the way I called in to see if we could get one more day added to our permit – and Ryan pulled through and got us the 28th.  This meant we had all day to take in the park before heading out on the 28th.

We managed to get to the Grand Pacific and Margerie glaciers in the Tarr Inlet and enjoy them by ourselves before any large, or small, cruise ship entered.  The Grand Pacific was like a ribbon of ice, and sadly, was diminished.  The Margerie was impressive as we were about 0.6 mile away and could hear the crackling, like explosives going off, as it shed ice into the inlet.  On our way out of the Tarr Inlet we took advantage of a report of two grizzly bear along the shore and swung in for a look as three cruise ships headed past us towards the glaciers.

Next it was the Lamplugh and Johns Hopkins glaciers.  At the Lamplugh, people were walking along the shore at the face of it arriving by either kayak or tender.  We headed into Johns Hopkins, and an ice field, carefully working our way towards the glacier.  As the ice field became too dense, we decided it was time to turn back and navigate back out.

One last glacier to check was Reid glacier in the same name inlet and on to our prior anchor site at Blue Mouse Cove, staged for a departure on the 28th.
