August 25, 2021 - Shelter Bay (Rounding Cape Caution)

Our stay in Shelter Bay was worked out well – lovely anchorage and easy to access.  Rowing about the head of the bay at low tide, I spotted three black bear, one each on the south shore, head of the bay, and north shore.  Leaving the bay was revealing as I did not know how close we had come to a fish farm, along the south side of the bay, as we entered in the fog!

As we neared Jeannette Islands, on route to the Broughton’s we came across a whale feeding.  We slowed to stay out of his path, however, he surfaced right in front of the boat.  Startled, he rolled over and headed down, surfacing again for air, and disappeared.

As we neared Broughton Island, Lois made calls to her doctor to check in, and we determined we needed to get home ASAP.  We headed to Port McNeill to sort out next steps ….  Realizing our options were limited, we made the decision to motor straight back to U.S. waters.
