June 27,  2022 - Sandborn Canal

Theresa had shared that they had caught two halibut at Sandborn Canal and that it was a lovely anchorage.  We decided to give this a try and check-out the 60’ plateau near the entrance for fishing.  With a bit more investigation we found that the charts for Sandborn Canal are not accurate, and we found the plateau is not flat as we performed soundings of the area.

We initially anchored halfway into the Canal, but after taking a tender ride around we decided to reposition towards the mouth of the Canal for the view and proximity to potential fishing spots.

The next day - FANTASTIC – we caught our fist halibut in 270’ of water, a 28” fish!  Lois is happy not to have chicken (or steaks) tonight for dinner.  Lois took to the cleaning and cutting the filets from the fish, little rusty, but got it done!

Next day we went fishing again, trying the entrance to the canal.  No luck and lost the rig Carl had given us, snagged on the bottom.  Went further out looking for the 60’ spot, and with some trolling, found it.  We fished for about 3 hours – all we caught was a sea star!

We met Chuck and Chris Quist from Esprit d’ Four while fishing.  We had previously chatted with them in Wrangell!  On their return they stopped by and invited us over for happy hour.  We had a very nice time aboard and found out they knew Dean and Thresa Klein – had met them last year and did some boating together.  Small world.  And they gave us a bucket of shrimp heads for crab bate – nice folks!

As we left on the 30th we went out in Raven and dropped the anchor on the flat spot.  Pretty quickly we had a fish on, a 20” halibut, looking too small we released the catch.  A bit more fishing produced a catch of two sea stars.  Time to move on ….
