July 13,  2022 - Chapin Bay

We thought about heading to Kake but decided we needed non-marina time.  Chapin Bay looked interesting with a large anchorage area and protection from the forecasted east winds.  We headed there under drizzly, low visibility, conditions making a couple of detours near Carroll Island and Herring Bay, looking for a good halibut fishing spot.

We pulled into Chapin to find one other boat anchored.  We went further into the bay for distance and seclusion.  Once settled we dropped Nevermore for a row about the head of the bay.

As we had breakfast, following a good night’s rest, we spotted our FIRST bear, a grizzly, on the eastern shore.  It was hard to believe we had gone this long without spotting a bear.  After breakfast, we set the crab pot out with a chicken leg.  Suspicious as we see no other crab pots and nothing in the write-ups about crabbing.  But we spotted several streams and thought it was worth a try.
