July 25,  2022 - Windy Bay

We woke at 4:30 to get an early start, but conditions looked foggy and decided to give it another hour.    The fog lifted by 5:30 allowing us to head out to catch the current running south, along with the wind which was forecasted to be out of the north.  Exiting East Inlet we immediately ran into 15 – 25 kts of wind, out of the north, as predicted and lumpy conditions.  In ~45 minutes we were at Evening Point and the wind eased and we had calm conditions from here on to Windy Bay.

As we reached the exit of Grenville Channel, we spotted whale feeding along the shore.  They looked and moved differently than humpback whales and we wondered if they might be pilot whales.  We continued into Wright Sound and turned into McKay Reach when Lois yells out “Sh.., sh.., sh.., sh.., sh.. !”  A humpback surfaced off our starboard bow and was headed straight into our path.  We had the throttle control in the PH and she was on the flybridge and could not throttle back, fortunately, I was in the PH and cut the power just in time for him to surface ahead of us right in out path!

The rest of the trip was uneventful, even the running with the current through Hiekish Narrows, was uneventful. Pulled into Windy Bay where a sailboat, Saving Grace, was anchored in the preferred spot, so we went to the head of the bay and anchored there for a peaceful night.

Add ~ 1 pint of oil to top off the 25 kW.
