July 26, 2022 - Rescue Bay
We left Windy Bay, rounded the corner, and stopped for photos at the spectacular Kynoch Falls. From there it was straight down Mathieson Channel to Rescue Bay. Again, Saving Grace, was anchored in the preferred spot, so we found a lovely spot near the islets along the west shore. Lois got a row in while Geary inspected the hardtop for more of the soot balls from Hoonah. The light breeze we had died, the temperature rose, and the flies came out enforce, into the salon we went where the temperature was in the high 80˚s. As it approached 89˚in the salon, we gave up and started the air conditioning – and it was a huge relief in cooling the boat. For the next 2 – 3 hours we basked in AC while the three other sailboats in the bay sat envious.
The next day Geary got a row in early and then did his best to finish cleaning the hard top before the heat and flies arrived. We got the tender and kayaks down and took a tour of the Jackson Marine Park in the kayaks. Later in the afternoon as the heat continued to build and the flies continued to pester, we took the tender out for a ride down Jackson Narrows. As we approached Lochalsh Bay, we slowed to look inside when suddenly a whale surfaced at the tip of the peninsula about 100’ from us! Quite the adrenalin rush! We got back to the boat, temperature was in the high 80˚s, so we decided to run the AC for a couple of hours before calling it a night.
Next morning, we woke to another calm day and the bark of a wolf! We weren’t certain at first if one of the other boats had a dog, but soon we could see the wolf standing on the beach and letting out alternating barks and howls. Our first wolf sighting!
