July 31,  2022 - Fougner Bay

This was an interesting day …..   In the morning we took care of some boat housekeeping in anticipation of fishing in the afternoon tide change.  We got all our morning objectives taken care of and headed out to try our luck at fishing.

 

It was planned to use the get-home motor again and make water at the same time, along with running the AC in the engine room.  Started the 25kW, and then started the water maker.  The LPP of the water maker refused to perform leaving us with no water maker!  This issue was set aside as we continued to set up for salmon fishing.  We transitioned to the get-home drive and Geary was all set to drop the downrigger and gear when a whale surfaced just off the starboard stern, 20’ away!!!!  He surfaced again amidship about 20’ away and again at the bow before disappearing.  

 

Finally got the hook in the water and had only one solid strike during the whole time (~2 hours).  The one strike jumped out of the water and came free from the hook …..

 

Anchoring in Fougner Bay, we became concerned about the location as we are exposed to the NW winds that were predicted.  After studying conditions, we choose to stay the night expecting the wind forecast was more applicable to the outer coast versus the inner passages.  We had a calm night with winds of only 1 -2 knots.

 

Finally, I e-mailed Rob at FCI about the water maker.  He responded back promptly suspecting we had an air lock in the pump and provided a recommendation on how to bleed it.  We performed the bleeding procedure and the system worked perfectly.  Suspicion is now that this may have been part of the on-going struggles to start the water maker and will monitor future performance.

August 25, 2025 - Everett

August 25, 2025 - Everett An uneventful return to Everett from Roche Harbor.  As we settled in we were soon greeted by Ron and Gretchen and Lois whipped up a nice meal that lasted well into the evening.   This competed 128 days. 3,580 NM of travel on Raven of which 88 days were in SE Alaska.   A good trip with, unfortunately, too much rain.   We had three boardings: US Coast Guard & Customs and Border Patrol Boarding ADFG Boarding CBSA Boarding   We only had a few minor problems: Windlass minor repair Failing transmission rocker switch Failed washdown pump   Our fishing was salmon focused: 17 Coho 22” – 30” 10 Halibut 20” – 31” 26 Dungeness crabs   We experienced some peripheral events: June 16 - Cruise ship breaking its mooring July 29 – Russian Tsunami Aug 10 - Landslide in Tracy Arm   We were gifted lots of wildlife: Humpback whales display Orca whales display Dahls porpoise Harbor porpoise Seals Sea lions Sea otters River ot...

August 18, 2025 - Gowland Harbour We got a good start and made our transit through Seymour Narrows near slack, making our way to Gowlland Harbour where we found many boats at anchor, including  Hodor  and  Lonian  (owned by Lorenzo Fertittta).   Hodor  is the “supply ship” to  Lonian  carrying all sorts of toys.  The next morning, we exchanged greetings with  Harvest Moon  who had anchored late in the afternoon the previous day.
