August 14, 2022 - Campbell River
As we left Maud Island, we would be going against the current unless we waited until about 2:30 PM. Wanting to get to dock and take care of cores, we left, working our way along the shore to take advantage of the back eddies helping us along. While a little unsettling at times due to a few locations where the water was boiling, the overall trek worked well.
We crossed Discovery Passage and made our way to G-dock with relatively little effort. Once settled, we hauled off the garbage and bottles and spruced up for a nice dinner at the Harbour Grill. Lois ordered the sockeye and Geary a tenderloin making for a nice surf and turf dinner between the two servings. Returning to the boat we were treated to a lovely sunset and a view of the cruise ships making their way through Seymour Narrows and Discovery Passage at slack.
The next day we headed across the dock to Steve’s boat at 6:00 AM and off we went fishing. The first hour we spent trolling over Wilby Shoal at about 35’. We both had a strike and lost both fish. From there we went out toward the green channel marker and fished at about 180’ and right away we each caught a nice size Chinook. Since we had reached our limit, we decided to try for ling cod by trolling close to the bottom (180’) along the shoal near the red marker drifting towards the light house. We again both had a strike and lost the fish. Steve was pretty sure we had a ling cod on with those strikes. After a bit more time we decided to call it. As Lois reeled in her line when she got a hit. It took quite a bit more work to bring this one in and it was a big Chinook (Steve put it on his license and took it with him as we had already reached our limit). We got back to the dock where Steve cleaned and filleted them for us. Since it was still early, we had time for Geary to go up and get a haircut, Lois to hit the grocery store for provisions, and for Geary to start a wash down of Raven.
The next day Lois had skating work to tend to and Geary finished giving the boat a good washing, checked out the black water pump, cleaning the water maker pre-filter and make a run to the liquor store.
