August 2,  2022 - Carriden Bay

We enjoyed a quiet night and woke to a clear morning.  Checking the weather, we agreed that today sounded like a good weather window to round Cape Caution.  Environment Canada had the wave forecast for the rest of the week building – so off we went albeit a late start.

As we travelled Fitz Hugh Sound, we came across several humpback whales (over 20) feeding in the area.  It was quite spectacular watching (and dodging) the whales and their massive, graceful tails, as they would go deep.  To make it more interesting, at one point there were a flock of birds circling the boat, three or four passes.  They had markings like a Sabine’s Gull.

As we cleared Calvert Island the ocean swells picked up (calm winds) of about 3’ at six seconds.  Not awful, but getting uncomfortable, so we ducked behind Table and Egg Islands for a bit of relief.  We rounded Cape Caution and were now taking the swells from the stern, however, soon we were feeling the effects of Slingsby Channel (very lumpy).  Moving out towards Storm Islands made for a smoother ride.

We were planning to head towards Monday Anchorage, however, the forecast called for NW 10 – 15 for the next few days so we decided to head for a more sheltered location turning up Wells passage to anchor in Carriden Bay.  While enroute, and at anchor, we took care of housekeeping chores such as; laundry and water making underway, interior cleaning, adjust downrigger, and top off oil on 25 kW.
