We scheduled service at Tri County Diesel to address routine maintenance and to correct a leaking hose on the 25 kW generator.  I asked about the engine heat exchanger as it was exhibiting signs of corrosion at the end cap.  Derek shared that Tri County has a policy to inspect, clean and test these components, heat exchangers and aftercoolers, every 3 - 5 years, depending on the component.  The aftercooler, being most critical, with Cummins recommending a service interval of 3 years.  We decided we should pull all three and service them.

After pulling the heat exchanger, it could be seen that the corrosion was worse than realized.  After disassembling and inspecting, it was clear that the heat exchanger was significantly plugged and on the verge of failure.  Only option now was to replace with a new unit as it was also discovered that there was failure in the wall of the heat exchanger allowing water to seep.

Fortunately the aftercooler and the transmission oil cooler were in much better condition and easily serviced, test and returned to service on Raven.

We completed oil, filters, coolant changes as well as the heat exchangers, performed a sea trail, and all is running well with our QSM-11.

August 25, 2025 - Everett

August 18, 2025 - Gowland Harbour We got a good start and made our transit through Seymour Narrows near slack, making our way to Gowlland Harbour where we found many boats at anchor, including  Hodor  and  Lonian  (owned by Lorenzo Fertittta).   Hodor  is the “supply ship” to  Lonian  carrying all sorts of toys.  The next morning, we exchanged greetings with  Harvest Moon  who had anchored late in the afternoon the previous day.
