March 27,  2023 - Everett, WA- Anchor Chain Replacement

We had Raven hauled out so that we could replace the 300' of anchor chain with 400' of anchor chain.  During some of our anchorages, we felt our scope was insufficient with the 300' of anchor chain and wanted the additional chain to improve our scope in deep anchorages.

We ordered 400' from Washington chain, making sure it was the correct specification to match the windlass; Peerless ACCO G43 1/2".  The 400' we ordered would weigh ~1,000 lbs!  Se picked it up using a truck with a hydraulic lift gate and maneuvered it on a pallet using a hydraulic pallet jack.

Once we arrived at the boat with the new chain, we laid it out along the ground in 25' lengths.  With the pallet empty, we placed the old chain on the pallet so that we could return it to Washington Chain for disposal.

From there, we started making the chain at 50' intervals with the bitter end of the chain painted yellow/red.

One of the key learnings was that the bitter end of the chain, secured with rope and shackles was not the best design as the shackle holding the rope to the chain would not have fit through the hawsepipe.  We took on the challenge of performing a rope/chain splice, eliminating that shackle.  And we wove a loop in in the other end that would be on a shackle secured to the boat.
