April 25 - 29, 2023 - Russel Island

Philbrook’s needed our position open so that they could launch a vessel on the ways in front of us, so we left after the work was completed on the boat.  Lois popped a meat loaf into the oven as we headed out so we would have dinner ready when we anchored.

 

We pulled in behind Russel Island, where two ketches were already moored, and found a nice spot in close to the island.  We had calm conditions in which to drop our anchor with its new chain – all went well.

 

The next morning, we hailed Victoria Coast Guard to report a ~25’ sloop that appeared to be adrift north of Russel Island.  Canadian Coast Guard sent a RIB to investigate.  After checking the boat, it was towed close to shore and an anchor set. Definitely abandoned.  As the afternoon approached and the weather warmed as the sun was out, we took the tender to Russel Island and hiked the trail and visited the Hawaiian house on the island.

 

The next day we took turns rowing, with Lois headed toward Jackson Rock and Geary making a loop around Russell Island.  We also took a tender ride to Fulford Harbor and visited Hans and Bee on True North. 

 

Saturday, we had another warm, sunny, day and decided to try the new kayak davit and lower the kayaks.  More work on the process however it appears like the davit will do the trick.  We had a good morning kayaking around the island, and while returning to Raven for lunch, Lois found an interesting stick floating in the water.  The stick had grooves in it that must have been from insects eating away at the piece before if found its way in the water and losing its bark.  Geary took a side trip out to Jackson Rock and discovered that it was a protected bird nesting site. The number of boats in the anchorage has increase to about 8 boats as we approached the weekend, with much turnover as boats come and leave for a short visit.  After lunch Lois got one more row in while Geary kayaked behind her making their way around the island.  We pulled the boats up and prepared for a Sunday departure.

January 11,  2023 - Van Isles, BC - On the hard Prior to arriving to Philbrook's we had started a dialogue regarding the work list, along with photos, to help with estimating and pre-planning.  This was useful as I was able to ensure that the parts (transducers and paint) were available and transported them with us avoiding any lead time issues or transportation cost associated with a border crossing. Our project manager, Ian, checked in with us first thing on Monday.  Ian promply started introducing us to the leads responsible for the work packages.  The whole process was very professional with good collaboration.  I was able to walk through each item of my list with the appropriate lead and discuss details.  Immediately after being hauled out we had people on the boat starting work on various projects. August 25, 2025 - Everett

August 25, 2025 - Everett An uneventful return to Everett from Roche Harbor.  As we settled in we were soon greeted by Ron and Gretchen and Lois whipped up a nice meal that lasted well into the evening.   This competed 128 days. 3,580 NM of travel on Raven of which 88 days were in SE Alaska.   A good trip with, unfortunately, too much rain.   We had three boardings: US Coast Guard & Customs and Border Patrol Boarding ADFG Boarding CBSA Boarding   We only had a few minor problems: Windlass minor repair Failing transmission rocker switch Failed washdown pump   Our fishing was salmon focused: 17 Coho 22” – 30” 10 Halibut 20” – 31” 26 Dungeness crabs   We experienced some peripheral events: June 16 - Cruise ship breaking its mooring July 29 – Russian Tsunami Aug 10 - Landslide in Tracy Arm   We were gifted lots of wildlife: Humpback whales display Orca whales display Dahls porpoise Harbor porpoise Seals Sea lions Sea otters River ot...

August 18, 2025 - Gowland Harbour We got a good start and made our transit through Seymour Narrows near slack, making our way to Gowlland Harbour where we found many boats at anchor, including  Hodor  and  Lonian  (owned by Lorenzo Fertittta).   Hodor  is the “supply ship” to  Lonian  carrying all sorts of toys.  The next morning, we exchanged greetings with  Harvest Moon  who had anchored late in the afternoon the previous day.
