June 7, 2023 - St John Harbor
We left Ratz Bay and made our way north through Kashevarof Passage and past Exchange Cove where we noticed two fishboats dishing near the islets outside the cove. We continued to Sumner Strait where we stopped at the flat top we had fished previously. Arriving a bit after slack tide of 10:03 AM, we stopped (1309 nm) and fished from 10:50 AM to 12:50 PM, with each of us pulling in a fish looking like a Grunt Sculpin and a Buffalo Sculpin, which we released. Looks like Carl is right – the halibut have not yet arrived. We motored on to St. John Harbor where we lowered the kayaks and explored the flats at the head of the harbor followed by a circumnavigation of Southerly Island. We were surprised as we approached Southerly Island to see what looked like a large deer, but closer observation led us to believe it was an elk cow. After our two-hour kayak adventure, we put the kayaks away and settled in for a nice diner with a beautiful view looking out over Sumner Strait.
