July 30, 2023 - Tracy Arm Cove - Dawes Glacier

Double checking the timing, we planned a noon departure to allow time for Raven to pick-up the tender and SaltHeart to haul up their anchor and leisurely make our way to slack at the narrows (Juneau 12:40 PM – 13.47’ / 1:25 PM).  As we approached the narrows, we had a new challenge - bergie bits!  Since the current was slowly flowing out, we waited 10 – 15 minutes for the bergie bits to recede with the current, clearing a path, for us to exit.  With the timing at slack, it was much easier to slowly navigate our way out the narrows and around the bergie bits.  And with two more feet of water, with this tide, it was a much less stressful challenge to navigate the entrance area where we found more bergie bits.  We carefully navigate our way, through numerous bergie bits, up Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier (N57˚ 30.329˙/W132˚ 50.259˙).  While overcast and slightly hazy, it was still a spectacular site and worthwhile journey!  Soon it was time to turn and make our way, back through the bergie bits, to our anchorage bidding our farewells’.  We choose Tracy Arm Cove for a secure and calm anchorage so could get good rest for the night as it had been a long day and a stressful navigating the bergie bits.  It was a bit surprising making our way back down Endicott Arm as we saw bits all the way down the arm where during our transit up the arm, we started encountering them as we reach the vicinity of Fords Terror.
