August 14, 2023 - Millbrook Cove
We left Pruth Bay planning to stop at Penrose Island as our staging point for tomorrows rounding of Cape Caution. As we traveled down Fitz Hugh Sound, the waves were 1-2’, choppy, but comfortable. We set course to maintain the option for Penrose Island and were looking towards Goose Bay or Millbrook Cove. Expecting fog in the morning, as we had this morning, the greater the distance we made today under sunny conditions would make the following day easier. Aware that high tide was 1:31 PM, and we were making good speed against the flood (unexpected current help), winds were light, we pressed on towards Goose Bay or Millbrook. We crossed Rivers Inlet with no problem, however as we neared 1:30 PM the ocean swells and wind began to build. We made our way north of False Egg Island and turned into Irving Passage, past Brown Island, into Millbrook Cove. We noted the buoy E6 had drifted west and was in the channel along Shield Island. Our biggest surprise was the push we had, coming down Fitz Hugh Sound on a flood, as we were making close to 9 knots at our normal 1300 RPM setting. We were pleased to have made this passage under good conditions despite the weather forecast. The conditions matched more closely the reported lighthouse reports, NW08E, 2FT CHP LO W, but did build as forecasted making our last hour or travel a bit more challenging but satisfying to have comfortably positioned ourselves closer to rounding Cape Caution!
