August 5, 2023 - Ketchikan

An early departure to arrive at Ketchikan near slack, early in the morning, to enable an easy and timely fueling.  As we approached Tongass Narrows, Disney Wonder hailed us to check on our intentions.  After a brief chat, we agreed we would stay close to the starboard shore with them passing to our port.  Once inside the narrows, it became clear our intercept point was later than discussed and would be closer to Danger Island.  We hailed and offered to throttle back and allow them to pass us and eliminate possible congestion at this tight spot.  What we did not realize was they were going to slow to 6 kts in the passage, going slower than we preferred.  This resulted in us following at this slower speed all the way into the harbor – lesson learned.  We arrived at the fuel dock at 10:30 AM and left at 12:30 PM after taking on 1,189 gallons.  Departing the fuel dock, we called the harbor master and were informed we needed to wait about an hour for some boats to depart.  We decided to have lunch and anchored near Pennock Reef at 12:45 PM.  Immediately after anchoring we received a hail from the harbor master giving us a slip assignment.  We finished lunch, hauled anchor at 1:15 PM, docking at 2:00 PM.  Soon we had met up with Carl and Melody for a walk downtown to take in the 6th Annual Blueberry Arts Festival.  Returning to Raven it was laundry, showers and off to sleep in preparation for an early morning departure.
