August 6 & 7, 2023 - Prince Rupert

Leaving Ketchikan at high tide, we rode the ebb out to Dixon Entrance arriving at slack and rode the flood into Prince Rupert.  The day was sunny, with calm seas and conditions – an easy crossing!  We pressed the engine RPM up from 1300 to 1400 to maintain 8 kts or better during the trip as we wanted to arrive at Cow Bay Marina while there would be staff on hand.  We noticed boats making their way through the Duncan Bay Shortcut to Venn Passage, and given the rising tide, decided we should be able to navigate the passage.  With the tide chart indicating 6’ we passed thru with 15’ under the boat – so glad the tide was rising as we did this route.  Arriving at the marina, squeezing into a snug position, we made the call to Customs and after a 30-minute wait, were easily cleared.  To give us a bit more space, the dockmaster moved the boat in front of us to make our departure easy.  We had a helping hand from Skip Sethmann, a QCYC member who was serving as Captain on the 150’ Eveva.

Waking the next day, we had foggy conditions with rain and wind on the way.  Skip offered to give us a ride to the grocery store, and we gladly accepted a return lift which would make hauling our groceries back to the boat much easier.  Afterwards, Geary gave Raven a wash while Lois took care of the groceries and laundry.  Next, it was a walk to the BC Liquor store to re-supply our wine cabinet.  A walk of the docks was next to check out a ~130’ sailboat.  While walking Lois struck up a conversation with a local fishing guide who kindly gave us a Coho and pointed us to Bob’s on the Rocks for a fishing license (a long walk in the rain).  We wrapped up the evening at the Crest Hotel treating Skip to a nice evening of food and conversation.
