 July 11, 2024 -Mangoun Island

We decided to try other areas identified as coho fishing grounds near Sitka.  We wanted to get closer to Sitka as weather systems were approaching for the day and the weekend.  We got an early start as high tide is 4:29 AM and we wanted to transit Dorothy Narrows, near high tide, versus going around Elovoi Island.  The transit went as expected with the depth shallowing to 15’ at one spot.  As we exited into Hot Springs Bay, we started seeing the charter boats arriving.  We followed one as they set up near Fragrant Island.  We cruised up past Galkin Island, nothing on sonar.  With that we headed back towards Sitka, entering through the Western Channel, and turning towards Olga Strait before heading to Mangoun Island.  We spotted only one other boat fishing near Dog Point and nothing significant on sonar.  Mangoun Islands are a state marine park which we will need to explore in the future.  Currently, we are getting gusts up to 25 kts in our cove along with wind waves and occasional showers – not a pleasant set of conditions – making rowing/kayaking too much of a challenge.
