July 18, 2024 - Takatz

As we left Tenakee Springs, we retrieved our two crab pots, six in one with four in the second.  All were large keepers except for one female.  We selected our six crabs and released the rest.  Enroute to our retrieval, we could see three bears along the shoreline, and departing Tenakee Inlet we had a pair of humpbacks pass.  We wanted to fish at the junction of Peril Strait and Chatham as two days prior we had good sonar readings on our way out of the Strait around buoy 35.  Once again, we found a seal in the upper level of the buoy!  We set about using sonar readings to locate fish schools that we could mooch.  After two hours of fishing, we had made several attempts and came up empty.  We overheard two charter boats, fishing nearby, sharing they were not having much success.  Suddenly we came across a significant sonar picture!  We stop the boat; Geary starts mooching and within a few minutes we had a nice Coho on the hook – giving us a good fight with several runs.  We gave it another thirty minutes before heading on to our next anchorage.  Enroute, we make a brief detour to Kasnyku Falls before arriving at Takatz.  With calm conditions, and only one other small boat in the anchorage, Beth takes advantage for the opportunity to row about the bay.  As Beth gets a row in, Geary gets busy with cleaning the Coho resulting in two fillets.   Dinner tonight is salmon, crab salad and pasta!
