Headed back to Sitka to meet with Luke Holst the local Northern-Lights technician to check out our 6kW and why it is still running hotter than normal. We discussed the checks that Geary had performed, heat exchanger, impeller, anti-syphon valve and hoses. Luke started with the impeller to make sure it was in good working order as well as the sea strainer. Next, he pulled the intake hose to the pump – voila – the chucks of the previously failed impeller had been shoved down into the intake hose versus flowing downstream to the heat exchanger. With the intake cleared, we performed a check of the generator, and it was running at its normal operating temperature. Luke admitted this was the first time he had seen this condition from a failed impeller! We also gave Raven a washdown and took care of re-provisioning. After successfully taking care of all the needed chores we headed out to town for a nice celebratory dinner out at Bayview Pub. It was a quite evening in town as all the cruise ships had left – just the locals and visitors from yachts.
The next morning, as we took care of laundry before departing, Geary walked over to Orion’s Star to chat with Randy Harley and learn of his fishing experience. Luke had shared his parents are commercial fishermen and that coho had not yet arrived in the area rather they seemed more prevalent in Craig. Randy shared he too had difficulty finding coho and had been successful by fishing near the charter boats. Our fishing for coho, at this time, sounded like it was going to be a challenge!
