August 14, 2024 - Goose Island
Today was an exposed, open water, crossing from Hecate Strait into Queen Charlotte Sound as we made our way south towards the Goose Group. Given the swells and winds were from the NW, we agreed to try an open anchorage area on the east side of Goose Island – a place where Shawn had anchored during his commercial fishing days in the 1980’s. We got an early start as the winds were forecast to pick up after noon and found a nice spot, in 20’ of water, with a view of the sandy beaches, and protections from the swells. Soon after a bit of lunch, the winds picked up with gusts up to 25 kts. We set out an additional 40’ of chain as we found ourselves dragging with the wind gusts. Soon three sailboats had settled into the anchorage one of which was a beautiful 100’ ketch. As we approached evening, the winds settled, and we found ourselves with occasional light rocking motion through the night.
