August 22 - 24, 2024 - Octopus Islands
With a clearing sky we made our departure down Mayne Passage, to Johnstone Strait, Discovery Passage and into Okisollo Channel, at time going against strong current, to make slack at Okisollo narrows. Arriving at Octopus Island Marine Park, we found numerous boats, all enjoying a sunny warm day at anchor, with many anchored in Waiatt Bay. We found a roomy anchorage spot and settled in as boats continued to arrive. During the morning check of the engine room, the main engine dip stick tube appeared was loose and it was noted to check on this during our next maintenance. However, I was surprised to find that the tube had failed and allowed approximately a gallon of oil to leak. Fortunately, the absorbent pads captured the oil with none reaching the bilge pump. While Lois took a row about the bay, Geary bagged the oily pads and replaced them with fresh pads.
The next day was spent making a temporary repair of the dip stick tube to contain the oil. A replacement part has been ordered and will be available in Campbell River next week. With a successful test run of the engine, and no oil spill, it was time to call it a night. A new item to repair – the master head Tecma control panel finally failed. We had suspected it was failing last year and had ordered a spare panel.
Saturday, Geary spent the day removing access panels and zip ties to remove and replace the failed Tecma control panel – which came with a wire harness. Hunting in the bilge area, the connections for the wire harness were found. With a successful wire pull, and making the appropriate connections, the new control panel worked perfectly!
