August 4 - 6, 2024 - Ketchikan
We awoke early and decided to head-out before the winds build. We had a comfortable cruise to Ketchikan, with the wind to our back and the tide in concert for most of the journey. As we approached Tongass Narrows we had a Dahls porpoise swim past and a humpback whale sighting. With an early arrival, we decided to proceed to the fuel dock and fill-up before docking. As we approached the fuel dock, we headed south, bow into the current, but we had wind gusts up to 25 kts on our stern making for some nasty wave conditions (wind and current in opposition) as we sat at the fuel dock. After an hour and forty-five minutes we had completed fueling ~1,000 gallons and were ready to go. We were at the south end of the dock and were able to swing the bow in past the dock and the stern out to clear the 95’ Canadian cruise ship, Swell, behind us. From there it was to Bar Harbor North for our final moorage. Once at dock, we took the girls into Ketchikan for a tour, a drink at the Happy Bear, and dinner at The Alaska Fish House.
The next two days were spent resting, cleaning the boat, provisioning, and preparing for our crossing into Canada. Wanderer had pulled into the harbor, and we had dinner with Rico and Wanda, Dave and Lynn at the Oceanview Restaurant. It was a fun evening with everyone sharing stories of their travels.
