September 1 - 2, 2024 - Copeland Islands

Artemis parted and we made our way out of the bay, closely followed by Tarka II, 15-meter yacht who honked at us, perhaps wanting us to go faster?  As we left the entrance we chose different routes, however, his converged with us near Mink Island.  As the overtaking boat, it was expected that Tarka II would modify their route to pass safely by at a distance, however, it became clear he had an urgent need to overtake us and to do so on our course.  Given his apparent urgency, we throttled back to allow him to safely pass us and assume our course.  We were relieved to see that he made is safely to his outstation at Pender Harbour.

We headed for the outside of the Copeland Islands as there are settled conditions in the forecast and found ourselves anchoring in 90’ of water in the center of a lovely cove letting out 350’ of anchor chain.  We have great views in all directions with no other boats crowding.  We lowered the kayaks and took a 2-mile tour of the island to our south.

On Monday, we had a leisurely start on the kayaks, heading out after lunch and making our way to view the campsites where the sea kayakers stayed.  Our first stop was at the Middle Copeland, where we beached the kayaks and took a short walk to view the east side of the island.  We then made our way to the North Copeland site, returning down the east side of the island for a 2.7-mile tour.  Returning to Raven, we had a relaxing afternoon, pulled the kayaks, gave them a light cleaning, and prepared for departure the next morning.
