May 11 - 12, 2025 - Ketchikan

Sunny and clear morning with minimal swells with some wind waves – good day for the crossing.  More importantly, presented Lois with her Mother’s Day card!

As we crossed into the Alaskan waters, we made our request to CBP and at 9:36 AM received clearance.

As we neared Ketchikan, we could hear the cruise ship Carnival Spirit hailing the commercial fishing boat, Baranoff Queen, requesting that they reposition as they were blocking their path down the Tongass Narrows.  Baranoff Queenreported that their propulsion was inoperative and had anchored while they tried to fix it and could not move.  Carnival Spirit hailed the Ketchikan Coast Guard for help to move Baranoff Queen as they had shoved off and were holding position with 17 kts of wind to their stern.  Coast Guard dispatched a RIB to help move Baranoff Queen however Baranoff Queen had no power with which to haul up the anchor.  The Coast Guard inquired of Carnival Spirit about their draft who responded back with 4 meters – Carnival Spirit pilot was getting impatient and wanted to know what the Coast Guard was going to do to remove

Baranoff Queen from their path, citing that in less than 10 minutes there was going to be issues and wanted to know why Coast guard did not just have Baranoff Queen drop their anchor and move her.  Coast Guard replied they were trying to find an equitable solution and were going to move Baranoff Queen to the side while paying out her anchor cable.  Carnival Spirit could then proceed over the sagging anchor cable.  While not pleased with the plan, Carnival Spirit did proceed as directed by the Coast Guard.

Once tied up at dock, we got our fishing license, and Geary changed the water maker filter while Lois made a grocery store run.  It was then off to diner at Oceanview Restaurant with the Tilden’s and desert aboard Koinonia before turning in for the night.

The next day was working of a list of items:

Engine oil and filter change

Zinc changes

New starter battery for the tender

Clean microwave

Grocery store

Liquor store

Garbage drop off

New crab pot

After a busy day, we headed back to Oceanview restaurant for a pizza dinner (too tired to cook).  Back to Raven for shower and to bed to prepare for an early start to the fuel dock the next morning.
