May 13 - 14, 2025 - Marguerite Bay

We got an early start to head for the fuel dock before continuing to Marguerite Bay.  Fueled, using the high-volume nozzle (50 gal/min) and had a bit of trouble managing it.  The pressure would cause the sight gauges to read high and there would be spitting out the vents (even sprayed Geary in the face when abruptly shut off).  However, we did get done in about an hour!


As we approached Traitors Cove, we spotted a small group of Dahls porpoise – always fun to watch.  We anchored in the south end of the Marguerite Bay with Koinonia joining us and anchoring towards the northwest.  Mark set his crab pots out along the SW shoreline, and we set our two crab pots, along the S shoreline, using anchovies for bait.  We got busy with housekeeping (laundry) and other chores.  After five hours Mark pulled his pots and came up with his limit!  Shortly afterwords, we saw a black bear along the same SW shoreline!

 

The next morning, we spotted two deer roaming the south shoreline and a black bear grazing before Koinonia hauled anchor heading towards Petersburg.  We tendered out and pulled our crab pots – one small female and one keeper – not what we expected.  We reset the pots with a raw chicken leg in each along with the rest of the anchovies.  A small fish boat with three fellows aboard pulled in and ask us if we had seen any bear?  We shared our info and soon they spotted the black bear along the NW shoreline and said they were going after it!  Pulling up to the dock, they headed in the direction of the where the bear was now grazing.  I managed to get a photo of the bear grazing, possibly the last time he would be seen, when the fellows emerged back at their boat.  By this time another small 22’ boat had pulled up and the two groups of three started chatting and soon the hunters were off in their boat.  We decided to take a hike the 4-mile hike to Marguerite Lake and came across the second group and learned that the fellows decided it would be too hard to pack out the bear and decided not to take it.  We headed back to the crab pots and pulled up 1 crab in the southerly pot(female)  and 4 crab in the SW pot giving us 4  keepers – not the haul we expected.

August 25, 2025 - Everett

August 25, 2025 - Everett An uneventful return to Everett from Roche Harbor.  As we settled in we were soon greeted by Ron and Gretchen and Lois whipped up a nice meal that lasted well into the evening.   This competed 128 days. 3,580 NM of travel on Raven of which 88 days were in SE Alaska.   A good trip with, unfortunately, too much rain.   We had three boardings: US Coast Guard & Customs and Border Patrol Boarding ADFG Boarding CBSA Boarding   We only had a few minor problems: Windlass minor repair Failing transmission rocker switch Failed washdown pump   Our fishing was salmon focused: 17 Coho 22” – 30” 10 Halibut 20” – 31” 26 Dungeness crabs   We experienced some peripheral events: June 16 - Cruise ship breaking its mooring July 29 – Russian Tsunami Aug 10 - Landslide in Tracy Arm   We were gifted lots of wildlife: Humpback whales display Orca whales display Dahls porpoise Harbor porpoise Seals Sea lions Sea otters River ot...

August 18, 2025 - Gowland Harbour We got a good start and made our transit through Seymour Narrows near slack, making our way to Gowlland Harbour where we found many boats at anchor, including  Hodor  and  Lonian  (owned by Lorenzo Fertittta).   Hodor  is the “supply ship” to  Lonian  carrying all sorts of toys.  The next morning, we exchanged greetings with  Harvest Moon  who had anchored late in the afternoon the previous day.
