May 15, 2025 - Walker Cove
The cruise to Walker Cove was uneventful – except – Geary managed to have his second log strike. Circling back to check our steerage and stabilizers, we could see that the log was barely on the surface and can be easily lost in the wave action. On the brighter side, we had several pods of Dahls porpoise swim by as we approached Point Whaley! As we neared Walker Cove, we saw several shrimp floats indicating a commercial fishing boat might be in the inlet. Fortunately, the fish boat, Jersey Girl, was at anchor leaving the mooring ball available to which we gladly tied. Under drizzling conditions, we decided to get busy shelling the crab. While shelling we lowered the crab snare – with low expectations – as we had seen a river otter in the vicinity eating a small crab! Just as we finished shelling, we spotted a black bear grazing along the shoreline – a nice way to wrap up the afternoon before having crab pasta for dinner.
The next morning was another calm day with virtually no wind, and drizzle. A bit of bird watching we spotted Harlequin and Barrows Goldeneye ducks cruising the shoreline. Geary got an hour row in, checking out the river delta and shoreline waterfalls. During lunch, the bear returned to the shoreline and offered up good photo opportunities before returning into the forest. After lunch, Lois took a row, going further up the river, finding spring water bubbling from the riverbed! Rowing out to the point, she also spied a whale bubble feeding. The bear made an encore return in the late afternoon, and it gave us a glimpse of its left rear leg. It appeared to have a whiteish area on the inside of the left leg and the rear of the bear appeared to have fur missing!
This morning started out with drizzle, a return of the bear, and soon started to clear turning into a partly sunny day. Geary was able to get the drone up for photos of Raven and the surrounding area plus a 30-minute row before a rain squall passed through the area. There were wind gusts through the afternoon settling to calm conditions through the evening with an encore return of the bear.
