Calm conditions today traveling up Chatham Strait – no other boats in sight! As we entered Fresh Water Bay near high slack, we decided to try halibut fishing in Wachusett Cove in ~140 ft depth. High tide was at 10:47 AM, we anchored at 11:15 AM and had hooks in the water at 11:30 AM. After 30 minutes we were considering leaving but Lois had felt nibbles. Geary switched to mooching for salmon, based on sonar indications, when Lois brought up a rock fish (released). We decided to give it a bit more time and by 12:30 Lois had a 26” halibut! There had to be more, so down the hook goes and by 1:30 Lois had her third catch, a small ling cod (released). After two hours, we decided it was time to move on and headed to Pavlof. We had lovely fresh halibut for dinner the next two nights while we sat out the rainy days with wind gusts up to 40 kts! We had one last treat before we left, a black bear grazing along the shoreline.
