 August 5, 2025 - Snug Harbor

We got an early start as it is difficult to tell when it will be slack at our halibut spot, the intersection of Clarence Strait and Sumner Strait.  It appears using the current prediction for “The Eye Opener” is a good guide as we found other local boats joining us near the slack current times associated this current station versus tide stations.  We fished for four hours in three different spots.  Our first spot we were immediately getting nibbles – but our bait was gone.  Resetting and trying again, we learned that there were small flounders (caught one - released) that ate our bait but the hooks were too big for them (we snag the one).  Repositing, we dropped the hooks and immediately each came up with a rock fish (released).  Repositing a third time, closer to the ridge – nothing.  After four hours, and six herring, we decided it was time to move on.  Of note is that the locals were near the ridge adjacent to our maker 0509.  As we left, a fog bank briefly set in, and cleared, making for an easy cruise to Snug Harbor.  Entering the harbor, we were greeted by a pair of common cranes – our first time seeing/hearing these birds.
